Libraries of Foster
De-selection of Materials Policy
Materials that no longer fit the stated mission and service priorities of the libraries will be withdrawn from the collections. This category of library materials may be items that are damaged, contain obsolete information, and may include materials that have not been used within a reasonable period of time.
Decisions will be based on accepted professional practice, such as those described in The Crew Method, and the professional judgment of the library director and designated staff. When necessary, local specialists will be consulted to determine the continued relevance and reliability of materials.
Materials in the Special Collections and Memorial Collections will not normally be discarded unless the library director or special collections librarian have duplicate or replacement copies of items in these collections.
Items withdrawn from the collection will be disposed of in accordance with local laws on recycling. When possible library materials in good condition eligible for withdrawal will be added to library book sales, donated to nearby nonprofit organizations and school, and may be offered for free as part of a library program in Foster.
